Children's Ministry

Each week the children are inivited to come downstairs after the faith focus time to explore biblical stories and themes with one another. This year we have begun to use the Rotation model. Each rotation has a different theme the children move from week to week to a different workshop which explores the theme. In our first rotation was lost and found and the workshops that the children went to included games, story telling, bread making and drama. Members of the congergation are encouraged to share their gifts as workshop leaders or shepherds. The shepherds are assigned to a different age group to be an assistant to the children. following age groupings:

  • nursery
  • 3- and 4-year-olds
  • kindergarten and grade 1
  • grades 2/3/4
  • grades 5/6

Music Ministry

Return

Sacred music is not an adjunct to worship. Although it may tell a story, although it may repeat or reinforce scripture, and although it may, at times, be a pleasant interlude or entertainment, music has a far more significant and primary role to fulfill in our spiritual life. Words appeal to our intellect, but music can reach our heart and nourish our soul. Music can make it possible for the human spirit to become closer to that most enigmatic aspect of our Triune God, the Holy Spirit.

Outreach Ministry

Let’s Do Outreach!

The next few months are going to present many opportunities for people in our congregation to become involved in very practical outreach activities. In April we will be hosting a dinner at the Cross Cancer Clinic residence for patients and their friends and relatives who must come into Edmonton for treatment. For that event, we simply ask for people to drop off food at the church, and members of Outreach go and serve.

Moms & Babies Shower

Again this year, Outreach is planning to hold the Moms’ and Babies’ Shower on Mother’s Day. For the last several years we have asked people to bring personal care and other items for moms, and food, diapers, clothes, toys or other items for babies to the church on Mother’s Day. These items are delivered to Bissell Centre, which is constantly in need of things for moms and their babies. Remember, too, that you can always bring such items and leave them in the box labelled for Birthright, which is at the church every Sunday.

Sandwiches for Bissell

We'd like to remind everyone that Bissell Centre feeds lunch every weekday to hundreds of inner city residents so they need lots of sandwiches. If you would like to donate, just make a loaf of freezable sandwiches (Yes- mayonnaise does freeze, as do cheese slices, but not lettuce) and put them in the freezer in the fridge downstairs. These are collected weekly and delivered to Bissell.

In support of Birthright

We are requesting donations of maternity clothes, baby items, and new or used clothing for infants up to I year in age. Items can be left in the box in the narthex. Your support is greatly appreciated. Birthright is a volunteer organization caring for those who are pregnant and distressed. Volunteers are needed. For further information, contact Karin Kossman 430-7275.

Worship Services at Riverbend Retirement Centre

Worship services are held the second Wednesday of each month at the Riverbend Retirement centre. Anyone who would like to attend the service and spend some time visiting with the residents is more than welcome. Contact RUC 430-7275.

Worship Services at Grandview

During the third Sunday of each month, we conduct a worship service for residents at Grandview Extended Care Centre. Volunteers are needed at 2:00 to help residents to the service at 2:30 pm. Contact Aleta Clarke 438-7275.

Mission & Service Birthday/Anniversary Offering.

If you celebrated a birthday or anniversary during the month, you are invited to make a donation on the last Sunday of the month. When we donate to the M&S Fund, the United Church is able to carry forward national and global ministry.

What is the Mission & Service Fund?

  1. The generosity of people in over 3,700 congregations keeps local churches going. We also pool some of our money across Canada in a unified Mission and Service Fund to finance programs and services provided by the whole United Church. Since The United Church of Canada began in 1925, generous Canadians have contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the M&S Fund. Within the next few years, that total figure will exceed 1 billion dollars!
  2. The Mission and Service Fund money, given by many individuals and many congregations, is what allows the United Church of Canada to be a national church, a Canadian church. Staff salaries, regional and national events that bring people together across the country - all of these things are available because of the M&S Fund. Without M&S, we would not be! The United Church receives no government funding, is not supported by Centraide, phonathons or television advertising campaigns. We are totally dependent on the generosity of people who worship with us and give to M&S.
  3. Mission And Service. It's what we do. It's the work of the Church. It's what Jesus asked us to do. It's our way of participating in the healing of a broken and hurting world. For The United Church of Canada, it's what we do and how we do it.
