Annual Meeting: The Annual Meeting of Yellowknife United Church will take place following worship, next week, June 10 – which also happens to be the 87th Anniversary of The United Church of Canada. We have been preparing a report for the annual meeting and an “unfinished hard copy” is available on the side table for your perusal. We were hoping to have the final copy ready by today, however, this has not been possible. If you are responsible for the preparation of a report please have it in to the office by Monday, June 4th, 2012. Thank you.
Affirm Study Group: The United Church has long been seen to be at the forefront in allowing the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer and two-spirited community to be more fully included in the life and work of the church through their ordination as clergy, the marriage of same sex couples, and the baptism of their children. At our Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 10, members of this Congregation will vote on becoming an Affirming Ministry. Please remember that only those who are members of this Congregation may vote on this issue. If you are not sure whether you are on our membership roll, please contact Gwyneth at the church office (873-6291)
Part-Time Employment Opportunity for August
Do you know someone who is interested in part time employment during August 2012? The Ministry and Personnel Committee is arranging coverage for the church office while our Office Administrator is away. This would involve about three hours a day, Monday to Friday, although the specific hours worked are flexible. If you or someone you know might be interested, please contact Margaret M. by email
Looking for Committee Members The “work” of the Church does not just happen. It is a direct result of the commitment and caring that the Minister and the Congregation bring to the worship services, the church meetings, and the special events.
To support the “work” the Church has six standing committees: ∙ Worship is responsible for arranging for all worship services ∙ Christian Development is responsible for arranging for Sunday School and other Christian education activities ∙ Outreach is responsible for promoting activities to support societal activities outside our church, both locally and globally ∙ Community Life and Membership (CLAM) is responsible for welcoming people to our church and coordinating activities that help people feel that they belong ∙ Stewardship is responsible for the financial health of the church and through the Property and Maintenance Sub-committee the physical property including the manse. ∙ Ministry and Personnel provide support for the Minister and administrative staff and is the liaison between the staff and the Congregation.
The committees for 2012/13 will be presented at the Annual Congregational Meeting to be held next Sunday, June 10th. Additional help is needed on all committees, especially Outreach and Christian Development.
If you would like to help with a Committee or would like more information about a particular committee or position please contact Donna A., Ian M., or Lloyd H. of the Nominating Committee, or speak with Rev. Peter Chynoweth.

Summer reading … Fall book study All are invited to participate in a book study to learn more about the legacy of NWT residential schools and what people experienced there. We will be reading My Heart Shook Like a Drum: What I Learned at the Indian Mission Schools, Northwest Territories by Alice Blondin-Perrin (Borealis Press 2009, 206 pages). We will read the book over the summer and meet in September to discuss the book. The author’s sister, Elder Bessa Blondin, will join us for the discussion.
