I need to make a preliminary note about the following “sermons” and about most of my recent written “sermons.”  For most of my ministry, I wrote sermons:  which had an introduction, body consisting of three points, and a conclusion, and all within the limits of seven pages or about fifteen minutes (members of the congregation say they are longer).  Lately, however, things have been churning.  My written reflections on the Scripture passages overflow what would normally be considered a sermon.  They are more the hybrid of a sermon and an essay.  What I do on Sunday morning is to distill this essay back into a sermon, one that is lacking both the length and the complexity of what is found here.
