Our plan for 2006 “Children at Risk”
The Bible Society of the West Indies, like you, is extremely concerned about the poor quality of life demonstrated by the high incidences of crime, violence, savagery, brutality, etc.,that seem to be the order of the day. In fact, we are alarmed that much of this kind of reprehensible behaviour is targeted at the most vulnerable among us, particularly the young, defenceless and impressionable. But instead of cursing the darkness we need to light a candle. To that end we have a wonderful opportunity that we are hoping you will want to identify with.
In 2006, we would like to make available to children in particular violence-prone/poor communities, a complete Bible in an easy-to-read contemporary translation. Our research has revealed that in many homes in these communities, when the violence flares and “all hell breaks loose” and persons are cowering in their homes, it is the audible reading of the Word of God (especially the Psalms) that helps them to cope and to keep their ‘sanity.’
