The act of crossing ourselves (making the sign of the cross) reminds us of many things. One is the price Jesus paid to save us from our sins. It is also an expression of the greatest Christian commandment; i.e., "You shall love the Lord your God with all of your mind, heart, soul, and strength." (Matthew 22:37)
- When touching our forehead, we are saying in effect: "I love You, Lord, with all of my mind."
- When touching our shoulders, we are saying: "I love You, Lord, with all my strength."
- When touching our chests, we are saying: "I love You, Lord, with all my heart and soul."
When we pray, we usually pray to God with our mind. But when we add the sign of the cross, we are also praying with our body. Thus, the whole person, body and mind, prays to God.
