St. Michael's Church History: Today
Today,
St. Michael’s congregation continues to be one of the few interracially mixed
in the city, with its members coming from within the city limits and its suburbs. St.
Michael’s Church is surrounded by a community which has great needs. To
address this, St. Michael’s is involved with numerous ministries and outreach
programs including those focusing on feeding and clothing the needy, and others
targeting the needs of local children and youth.
Each
year, St. Michael’s Church bestows the annual Compassion and Justice Award,
acknowledging a group or individual who does outstanding work for the under
privileged in the city, which demonstrates a feeling of compassion and a sense
of justice. Past recipients are: Lifeline Comprehensive Christian Center,
Habitat for Humanity, Workforce 2000 of the Children’s Home Society, The Union
Industrial Home, L.I.F.T. (Looking Into the Future Together), and Millhill
Child and Family Development Center.
Much of the rich history of Saint Michael’s Church is still clearly visible in the church buildings and the church grounds. Saint Michael’s Church is also surrounded by numerous historical sites related to the Revolutionary War period, many being accessible by foot from the church. Saint Michael’s Church is home to many architectural details of note, as well, especially the beautiful and historic stained glass windows throughout the church buildings (many of which are displayed on the pages of this web site), including the Tiffany windows shown on this page.
