He Comforts Us...So That We May Comfort Others

In the last New Hope Newsletter, I shared with each of you some thoughts about what it means to be "called". As you may remember, Oswald Chambers proposed to us that God's calling may not be a thundering command from the heavens;  it may be a subtle suggestion of how you can make a difference in the life of another human being, our church, or our community.

In my volunteer work as a telephone listener at a local crisis phone line, I have been struck by the number of human beings in our community who feel alone, uncared for, and desperate.  We talk to thousands of individuals each month who are willing to call an anonymous phone line because they just need to hear another voice; they need someone to listen and care.  Have you considered the power of your ministry of being available for others?  To simply listen and care?

Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth,  "He comforts us when we are in trouble, so we can share that same comfort with others in trouble."  (2 Corinthians 1:4).  A simple card or phone call, a hug, a touch, a comforting word, a non-judgmental ear can be a lifeline to a human being who is wounded or feeling discouraged.

Please consider reaching out to someone this week who you know is hurting or confused.  Let them feel God's love through your ministry of caring.

Are You "Called" to Share New Hope With Our Community?

"I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?'  Then I said, 'Here am I, send me'".  Isaiah 6:8.

In his book, "My Utmost For His Highest", Oswald Chambers asks us to consider what is meant for us to be "called by God".  Many of us believe that God's call to us will be a loud, unmistakable pleading from God to follow him.  Many of us also believe the He only chooses a few.  Matthew 22:14 says, "Many are called but few are chosen."  This would seem to reinforce our old beliefs about what is meant by God's calling.  But Chambers suggests that this scripture means that God calls all of us but few of us are receptive and open to his calling to us.  Chambers says, "The chosen ones are those who have come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and have had their spiritual condition changed and their ears opened."

I encourage each of us to change our thinking that God will come to us in pleading to do his will.  Instead, like his disciples (Matthew 4:19), let us pray that our ears and hearts be receptive, seeing and hearing God's calling in the most subtle ways.  Let's realize that we may not hear God through a loudspeaker of opportunity thrown in our path, but through a whisper of suggestion about ways we might get involved and make a difference in New Hope Christian Church and our community.

Our new Evangelism Committee held its first meeting on Sunday February 12th.  Please pray that this team of individuals will have receptive ears to the gentle suggestions of how we, as a church, might follow him.  And pray that you will pay close attention and recognize opportunities (however, subtle) that you can share New Hope with our city.
