First Christian Church of Freedom, The Church in the Village

Freedom, NH 03836

INTRODUCTION

For more than 150 years, the First Christian Church has been serving the seasonal and year-round residents of the Freedom area. We are an independent church that is not affiliated with any one denomination. Our doors are open to all who seek to have a living relationship with God. Our services are much like those of traditional New England Methodist and Congregational Churches. Our order of service is simple and basic. It concentrates on prayer, scripture, music and a message from our pastor that is relevant to living each day in the Freedom area.

The church is now fully handicapped accessible including the bathroom facilities.

The cover of our Sunday bulletin declares that this is “The Church in the Village Combining Traditional and Contemporary Faith Communities." Our goal is to provide a loving atmosphere and a caring community for all the people of the Freedom area.

Though an independent church, the First Christian Church of Freedom had its roots in the Christian movement of New England of the 1830’s. Faithful to that heritage it continues to be an ecumenical church, welcoming all those who believe in a Higher Power and call Jesus Lord or, the Christ. As our By-laws state, it is sufficient to be known as “Christian.”

On our church rolls there are found people who come from almost every major Protestant denomination as well Roman Catholicism, Russian Orthodoxy, Armenian Apostolic and Unitarianism.

Because Freedom is a community which encompasses a great number of vacation and retirement homes, the church offers Associate Memberships to those who have homes and church memberships elsewhere. An Associate’s membership letter remains in their other church, but they are treated as full members of the Freedom church and are eligible to vote in church affairs and hold office.

The church also carries on an active outreach program. Its foreign missions are carried on primarily through the work of Church World Service. It operates the Freedom Food Pantry providing food and other aid to people of Freedom, Effingham, Ossipee and other area families who are in need. A number of our members and friends are active in outreach in the community through Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and other local efforts.

The church also sponsors a Sunday morning faith education program for children.

There is an a active  Senior Choir and a substantial music program during worship and at other times thoughout the year.

After extensive investigation we have replaced our old hymnals with the, "Choice Hymnal" published by the Choice Press of St. Louis, MO. This was done to accommodate the extensive use of our organ and the vast selection of hymns that are familiar to our members and visitors who come from many religious backgrounds.

We urge you to visit with us and see if we can fill your need for a church home in this community. Whether you live in the Freedom area or are just visiting we would love to have you worship with us.

Our News Letter, "Freedom Rings" is published monthly. Please contact the church office if you would like to receive a copy or be added to the mailing list. The Newsletter is also available on this web page.  See the left column for the page.
